Oud Chips Grading
There is no global standard for grading oud chips.
There is also no fixed test unless the wood is sent to a lab. Most grades you see such as D, C, B, A, AA, AAA, or Super are usually set by the seller, just like how we do it here at Oud KL.
So what do we rely on?
Our senses.
At first, it takes time. But slowly, your nose, eyes, and hands begin to learn.
• Look at the wood
Good oud usually carries darker resin, especially deep in the grain.
• Feel it
It should feel dense, sometimes even heavy for its size. When you try to break it, it may snap clean or resist.
• Listen
When dropped on a hard surface, it often gives a crisp, sharp tap.
• Observe the shape
It should look natural, not perfectly cut like a rectangle.
• Test on charcoal
This is the real test. When heated, the scent should feel clean, not overly woody, and not harsh. It should be gentle, pleasant, and not irritate your senses. If you watch closely, you may even see oil bubbling out.
There are fake ouds that can imitate some of these signs, but with time, you will learn to tell the difference.
In the end, if the price feels fair and you truly enjoy the scent, that is what matters most.
This guide is for oud chips only, not oils.
